Music in Belize

There are a lot of different musical styles in Belize. Unfortunately, when it comes to live music here in San Pedro, most of what we hear is cover tunes of nineties alternative rock, classic rock, and country. I suspect this has a lot to do with what the venue owners think their crowd (mostly middle aged Americans and Canadians) wants to hear, and maybe they're right, but it would be nice to see and hear more local music. There is surprisingly little in the way of live reggae, punta, soca, etc.

So, here are a few examples of Belizean music.

Andy Palacio (Garifuna music)

 Ras Indio (reggae)

Supa G (Soca)
WARNING: lots and lots of booty shaking in this one, may not be suitable for all readers

Verge of Umbra (Belizean Metal!! the only one I know of)

Kelly McGuire (middle-age white guy ex-pat Texas country trop-rock music)
Kelly came down to Belize several years ago, fell in love with the place, and has written many songs and even an entire album about San Pedro. He is a decent musician and a nice guy--I even saw him perform live at Fidos!--but most of his stuff is way, way too country for me. Here is a link to one of his more palatable songs, King of the Island.
